The Ceylon Electricity Workers’ Union, affiliated with the ruling party, has requested bonuses for employees this year. However, the board of directors of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has decided not to approve these bonuses, according to reliable sources.
Ranjan Jayalal, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Electricity Workers’ Union, recently emphasized that there was no need for protests or strikes to secure bonuses, given the union’s ties to the government. Despite this assurance, no bonuses have been sanctioned for electricity workers this year.
In a separate announcement, the CEB stated there would be no reduction in electricity rates during the first half of the coming year. This decision is attributed to the lack of low-cost energy sources to meet the additional requirement of a billion more units of electricity expected next year compared to the current year.
The combination of these developments could intensify dissatisfaction among workers and consumers, potentially setting the stage for further challenges for the CEB.
