No Need to Follow Every IMF or World Bank Condition – Ravi Karunanayake

November 2, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake shared his views on how countries should engage with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

Speaking to the media, he said that nations are not obliged to accept every condition or proposal presented by the IMF.

Karunanayake noted that what is important is to consider their recommendations carefully and implement only what is genuinely beneficial and appropriate for the country.

He further emphasized that the IMF’s primary role should be to identify a nation’s financial weaknesses and support efforts to address those challenges.

The MP added that while Sri Lanka does require the assistance of international financial institutions, such support should be received with a clear understanding of what is right for the country.
