Tilvin Silva, General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), has firmly stated that the National People’s Power (NPP) will not enter into coalitions with political parties that have been “rejected by the people” in order to form majorities in local government institutions.
Speaking at a press conference following the announcement of the 2025 Local Government (LG) election results, Silva said the NPP has secured majority control in a significant number of local bodies. However, in some councils, despite the NPP receiving the highest number of votes as a single party, it does not hold an outright majority due to fragmented opposition representation.
“In places where other parties collectively have more seats, despite us leading in votes, we do not believe it’s fair or democratic for those parties to combine their small victories and claim control,” Silva said.
He emphasized that no party other than the NPP had secured a clear majority in any council. “Some of these parties have only won one or two seats. From a political standpoint, it’s clear the NPP has won this election,” he noted.
Rejecting any attempts by minority parties to form post-election alliances, Silva added, “It’s not democratic to add up the seats of groups that were clearly rejected by voters just to form councils.”
When asked whether the NPP would seek alliances in councils where it lacks a simple majority, Silva reiterated the party’s stance: “We will not align with defeated political parties. However, we are open to working with independent candidates—if they are genuinely willing to support the NPP’s agenda.”
Silva concluded by underscoring the party’s commitment to governing responsibly: “We aim to form councils wherever we have secured public support so we can carry forward our planned development projects for the country.”
