A fisherman has been reported missing following an incident at sea involving a fishing vessel that encountered strong winds off the coast of Beruwala early this morning (19), according to the Department of Fisheries. The Director General of the department, Susantha Kahawatte, confirmed that the vessel had departed from the Beruwala Fisheries Harbour on July 15 with six crew members on board and had returned to shore today.
The incident occurred during their return journey, and one crew member — a 35-year-old resident of Dodangoda — has been reported missing.
Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations in the area.
