Deputy Minister of Economic Development Nishantha Jayaweera says more than 12 million people have been issued Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs) to date as part of the government’s tax administration programme.
Speaking on the initiative, the Deputy Minister stated that an additional five million people are currently awaiting the issuance of their TIN numbers.
However, he noted that many eligible individuals are unaware that TINs have already been assigned to them because the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) does not send the numbers by post.
Jayaweera advised the public to verify their TIN status through the official website of the Inland Revenue Department by entering their National Identity Card (NIC) number.
He encouraged those who are uncertain about their registration status to use the online facility to confirm whether a TIN has been issued.
The Deputy Minister said the issuance of Taxpayer Identification Numbers forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen tax administration, improve taxpayer registration, and enhance the efficiency of the country’s revenue collection system.
Authorities have urged the public to check their TIN status through the official Inland Revenue Department website and ensure that their information is up to date.
