Over 29,000 Power Outages Reported Amid Adverse Weather Conditions

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has announced that a total of 29,015 electricity breakdowns have been reported across the country due to prevailing adverse weather conditions.

Despite facing challenges such as limited staffing and resources, CEB teams are actively working to restore power to affected areas, the utility provider said in a statement.

The CEB urged the public to report any power outages or safety hazards via the CEBCare mobile app or by calling the 1987 hotline, enabling teams to prioritize responses and ensure timely service.

“The cooperation and patience of our consumers during this period are greatly appreciated,” the statement added, noting that restoration efforts are ongoing around the clock to ensure power is brought back safely and efficiently.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) reports that 1,757 individuals from 485 families have been affected by the inclement weather sweeping across the island.

The adverse conditions follow the onset of the southwest monsoon, which brought heavy rain and strong winds to several areas since the evening of May 29.

According to the DMC, nine districts have been impacted, with three houses completely destroyed and 365 partially damaged.

Colombo and surrounding suburbs were among the hardest hit, where high winds caused widespread disruption to traffic on multiple major roads.
