Over 474,000 Candidates to Sit for 2024 (2025) G.C.E. O/L Examination Starting Tomorrow

Commissioner General of Examinations, Amith Jayasundara, announced today (16) that 474,147 candidates have applied for the 2024 (2025) G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L) examination, which is set to begin tomorrow (17).

Speaking at a special press conference, he detailed that among the applicants, 398,182 are school candidates, while 75,968 are private candidates.

Jayasundara urged all candidates to arrive at examination centers early and strictly adhere to examination regulations. He warned that any violations, including carrying unauthorized items, could result in severe penalties, including a ban from exams for up to five years.

Key Arrangements and Instructions:

  • Exam Centers: A total of 3,663 examination centers have been established across the country, including in the Northern Province. Special centers have been set up in Ratmalana, Tangalle, Matara, Chilaw, and Special Education Schools. Additionally, centers have been arranged at the New Magazine Prison in Colombo, Suneetha Vidyalaya in Watareka, and Maharagama Apeksha Hospital.
  • Identity Verification: Candidates must bring a valid identity document (NIC, passport, or driver’s license). Those without one should seek guidance from invigilators, but results will only be issued after verification.
  • Prohibited Items: Mobile phones, smartwatches, communication devices, correction pens, and notes are strictly prohibited. Candidates are only allowed to bring pens, pencils, and a bottle of water.
  • Exam Schedule: Exams will begin at 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., except on Fridays when the afternoon session starts at 2:00 p.m. Candidates must refer to their admission cards for accurate timings.

Jayasundara reminded candidates to ensure their admission cards are correctly signed—school candidates by their principal and private candidates according to instructions provided. He stressed that last-minute corrections can still be made today at the Examination Department.

“Arrive early and be seated by 8:00 a.m. to avoid any issues. We have taken every measure to ensure a smooth examination process for all candidates,” he concluded.
