Sri Lanka Rejects External Interventions at UNHRC, Reaffirms Domestic Approach

September 7, 2025

Sri Lanka has asserted that external initiatives would hinder national efforts and risk polarising the population, in a statement submitted to the UN Human Rights Council in response to the recent report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The government said it does not agree with the report’s conclusions and recommendations regarding international action, stressing that Sri Lanka has both the mandate and commitment to build a society that respects and celebrates diversity without division or discrimination based on race, religion, class, or caste.

Reaffirming its stance, the government declared it would not allow any resurgence of racism or extremism in the country.

The statement concluded that as Sri Lanka advances through its domestic processes, the understanding, encouragement, and support of the international community remain welcome and appreciated.
