Pakistan has announced that it launched airstrikes on 10 locations in Afghanistan early Thursday, alleging that the sites were used to carry out drone attacks against Pakistan the previous Wednesday.
The escalation has further increased tensions between the two countries and raised concerns over ongoing international mediation efforts.
The airstrikes targeted areas in the southern and eastern Afghan provinces of Kandahar, Paktia, and Khost.
Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said four civilians were killed in the attacks.
Mujahid denied Pakistan’s allegations that drone attacks had been launched against Pakistan from the targeted locations and warned that Pakistan would face consequences for the airstrikes.
He said Afghanistan would provide “an appropriate response” at a suitable time to what he described as attacks and acts of aggression by the Pakistani military.
