The Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill, which seeks to repeal the Parliamentary Pensions Law (No. 1 of 1979), was presented in Parliament during this morning’s (07) session.
The Bill was tabled by the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Harshana Nanayakkara.
Earlier this week, the Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill was gazetted, proposing the repeal of the existing Parliamentary Pensions Act. The draft legislation aims to abolish the pension entitlements currently granted to Members of Parliament and their spouses under the Act.
Previously, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the submission of the draft bill for consideration and approval by Parliament. The proposed legislation also received clearance from the Attorney General, along with Cabinet approval for its publication in the Government Gazette and subsequent presentation to Parliament.
In addition, the Cabinet granted in-principle approval to repeal the Parliamentary Pensions Law, Act No. 1 of 1971, at its meeting held on June 16, 2025.
