Performance Targets and Merit-Based Appointments Introduced in Sri Lanka’s Diplomatic Service

Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage announced significant changes to Sri Lanka’s diplomatic service, including the introduction of performance-based targets for ambassadors and high commissioners.

Speaking at the recruitment ceremony for the 2025 trainee intake of the German Industrial Training Institute in Moratuwa, Hewage emphasized the government’s commitment to ending the practice of appointing officials based on political affiliations and family ties.

He highlighted the importance of adopting a merit-driven approach to improve the effectiveness of Sri Lanka’s international representation. “These changes aim to ensure our diplomatic missions are efficient and aligned with national interests,” Hewage stated.

The reforms mark a shift toward professionalism in Sri Lanka’s foreign service, aiming to enhance the country’s global standing.
