Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that the Clean Sri Lanka programme should not be enforced by compulsion but should thrive on the will and voluntary participation of all citizens. The PM made this statement in Parliament today (09) during a debate on the government’s national programme.
Objectives of the Clean Sri Lanka Programme
PM Amarasuriya outlined the programme’s primary goals, which include:
- Setting an example and motivating society.
- Guiding individuals and communities toward positive change.
- Integrating social, moral, and environmental principles into national efforts.
- Restoring Sri Lanka as a developed and ethical nation through values and good governance.
She expressed hope that these efforts would help create a nation of “smiling people” by fostering better human relations and societal transformation.
Presidential Task Force for Implementation
A 19-member Presidential Task Force comprising experts and social activists has been established to guide the programme’s conceptual and policy framework. Their responsibilities include:
- Identifying initiatives at the district level.
- Raising public awareness.
- Managing resources efficiently.
- Monitoring project outcomes and addressing obstacles.
- Ensuring post-implementation success.
“This programme aims to achieve societal change by fostering internal transformation within individuals,” said PM Amarasuriya. She acknowledged that this approach differs significantly from conventional methods of implementation, which often rely on official mandates or enforcement.
Challenges and Vision
The Prime Minister acknowledged potential challenges, including shortcomings and intentional sabotage, but emphasized the need for perseverance.
“This transformation cannot be achieved through force. It requires everyone’s voluntary engagement and shared commitment,” she added, reinforcing the programme’s reliance on collective willpower and participation to ensure its success.
The Clean Sri Lanka initiative aspires to redefine governance and societal values, paving the way for a sustainable and ethical future for the nation.
