Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has stressed the urgent need to address the shortage of over 42,000 teachers in national and provincial schools across Sri Lanka.
Speaking at a meeting with the Cabinet-appointed Task Force on Digital Education Transformation (Grades 6–13), the Prime Minister said that bridging this gap is a top priority. She emphasized that, in the short term, the introduction of digital learning systems within the next six months could help minimize the learning deficit by making better use of existing resources.
The discussion focused on accelerating digital transformation in the education sector, tackling implementation challenges, and shaping effective policy measures, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Dr. Amarasuriya also highlighted the importance of equitable access to educational facilities, including for students with disabilities, and called for a robust, multi-sectoral approach to support the Task Force’s objectives. She underscored that ensuring inclusive, accessible, and high-quality education remains a critical part of the government’s education reform agenda.
