Police Announce Special Security and Traffic Plan for Sacred Relics Exposition at Gangaramaya Temple

Sri Lanka Police have announced enhanced security measures and a special traffic management plan in view of the public exposition of Sacred Relics brought from India, scheduled to be held at the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo from February 5 to 11, 2026.

The Sacred Relics are due to arrive in Sri Lanka on February 4, with the public exposition commencing at 6.00 a.m. on February 5 and continuing uninterrupted until 7.00 a.m. on February 11.

Police have issued a set of guidelines to ensure the safety and orderly movement of devotees, calling for full public cooperation with the security arrangements.

As large crowds, including foreign visitors, are expected, the public has been advised to remain vigilant against theft and to refrain from bringing unnecessary personal items such as helmets, large bags, and jackets. The use of mobile phones inside the Sacred Chamber is strictly prohibited.

Motorists are requested to use only designated parking areas and to strictly adhere to traffic regulations. A special shuttle bus service will operate from the Old MOD Grounds, Port City, and the vicinity of the Shangri-La Hotel for the convenience of devotees.

Several roads in the vicinity of the Gangaramaya Temple will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic during the exposition period.

Police further urge the public to observe Buddhist traditions within the temple premises and to strictly follow all instructions issued by security personnel to ensure a safe, peaceful, and dignified worship experience.
