Police have uncovered an illegal ilmenite mining operation at an archaeological site in Aruwakkaru, Puttalam, seizing several pieces of machinery used in the mining process.
The raid was carried out by the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Valana Division following a tip-off received by Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya.
Authorities confirmed that both foreign and local workers were involved in the illicit activities. Until now, access to the site had been restricted, with neither police nor government officials able to enter the area.
Statements are currently being recorded from employees at the site as investigations proceed.
The location holds significant archaeological value, with renowned Sri Lankan experts such as Dr. Shiran Deraniyagala, Dr. Nimal Perera, and Professor Gamini Ranasinghe having conducted extensive research there. Notably, stone tools discovered at the site have been examined and authenticated by world-renowned stone tool expert Professor Peter Hiscock of Australia.
