Police Warn of Rise in Online Fraud During Festive Season

April 6, 2026

Sri Lanka Police have issued a warning over a growing trend of online financial fraud, data theft and cybercrimes during the festive season, as criminals exploit increased digital activity among the public.

According to Police, fraudsters are targeting individuals through common festive-related activities such as online shopping, digital payments and other financial transactions.

Authorities say these scams are designed to trick users into sharing sensitive personal and financial information.

Common tactics include misleading advertisements, suspicious links, fake festive offers and giveaways, as well as fraudulent commercial and service websites that appear genuine.

Police noted that such scams are particularly effective during festive periods, when consumers are actively searching for promotions and discounts.

The public has been urged to remain vigilant when conducting online transactions, verify the authenticity of websites and offers, and avoid clicking on unknown or suspicious links.

Authorities further advised citizens to carry out online financial activities with caution and awareness to prevent falling victim to cyber fraud.
