Police Warn Public Against Forged Letter Circulating Online, CID Launches Probe

The Sri Lanka Police have issued a strong warning regarding a forged letter currently circulating on social media, stating that the document is entirely false and intended to mislead the public while tarnishing the image of the Police Department.

The fake letter, titled “CONVICTION”, falsely bears the name and a forged signature of Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya, and references a fictitious entity called the “Cyber Crime Headquarters, Colombo”.

In an official statement, Police clarified that no such institution exists, and that the letter uses misleading language and fabricated content that does not correspond to any officially recognized positions or departments within the Police.

Describing the document as a “deliberate fabrication”, authorities stated that the letter appears to have been crafted to mimic the format of official correspondence, with the aim of damaging the Police Department’s credibility and deceiving the public.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a full-scale investigation into the matter. Legal measures are being pursued to identify and prosecute those responsible for spreading false information under the guise of official communication.

Police urge the public to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of official notices through legitimate channels.
