The Postal and Telecommunications Officers’ Union, together with the United Postal Trade Unions’ Front (UPTUF), has announced that they will launch a strike from 4.00 p.m. tomorrow (17).
Union representatives said the action is being carried out over 19 key demands, including the payment of overtime allowances for postal officers and opposition to the directive requiring administrative and accounts office staff to record attendance through fingerprint machines.
The strike will begin tomorrow evening at the Colombo Central Mail Exchange and will escalate into a continuous islandwide strike affecting postal and administrative offices from 12.00 midnight onwards.
Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara, however, confirmed that Sub-Postmasters of 3,354 sub-post offices across the country will not join the trade union action. He assured that services at these sub-post offices will continue without disruption.
Nevertheless, he cautioned that the delivery of postal items could face delays as a result of the strike action by the Postal and Telecommunications Officers’ Union and the UPTUF.
