Power Outages and Flight Cancellations as Strong Winds Batter New Zealand

October 24, 2025

Strong winds of up to 155 kilometers per hour have left nearly 90,000 homes without electricity and caused widespread disruptions across New Zealand, according to official reports.

Authorities have also canceled more than 100 flights due to the severe weather conditions, national news services reported.

The New Zealand Meteorological Service said that the South Island and the southern parts of the North Island were the most affected by the intense wind flow.

Earlier today, red warnings for strong winds—the highest alert level—were issued for central regions, including Canterbury and Wellington, before being lifted a few hours later.

The powerful winds damaged the roofs of several houses, while fallen trees and power lines disrupted normal life in many areas. Tragically, one person died after being struck by a falling tree branch.

Authorities have urged the public to remain indoors, limit travel, and prepare for possible power and communication outages until conditions improve.
