A special District Coordination Committee meeting was held this morning (08) at the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat to assess agricultural damage caused by the recent cyclone and to discuss urgent response measures. The meeting was chaired by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and attended by relevant officials.
According to district authorities, 1,421 hectares of vegetable crops have been damaged due to severe weather conditions. President Dissanayake instructed officials to take immediate steps to compensate affected farmers.
Officials noted that although crop damage is significant, the reduction in the district’s vegetable harvest is around 25 percent. They added that while daily supplies to the district can continue, a drop in daily demand has been observed.
They further informed the President that this decline is largely due to false reports claiming a vegetable shortage in the Nuwara Eliya District and alleging price hikes, which have misled consumers.
