President Dissanayake Calls for Unity and Progress on Sri Lanka’s 77th Independence Day

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake marked Sri Lanka’s 77th Independence Day with a call to focus on the future rather than dwell on the past. Speaking at the official celebration at Independence Square in Colombo, he emphasized the shared aspiration of all Sri Lankans—north and south—to build a modern, united nation.

“There is a journey ahead for every citizen, a collective journey towards economic and socio-cultural independence, ensuring the freedom to live as a modern society,” he stated.

Highlighting the need for economic sovereignty, President Dissanayake urged a national commitment to achieving financial independence without succumbing to global pressures. “To attain economic freedom, we must dedicate ourselves together,” he affirmed.

He outlined a vision for a progressive Sri Lanka, promising a future where citizens inherit not just a historical nation but one they can be proud to call home—respected and enriched with cultural humanity. Stressing the importance of this moment in history, he called on citizens to seize the opportunity to shape the country’s future with greater determination.

“As human beings, we have an undeniable responsibility to foster a world of good humanity, where all people can experience and cultivate that humanity,” he said.

Concluding his address with a message of unity and national spirit, President Dissanayake declared, “Let us dream of this independence together and turn it into reality. While we may never become the richest nation, we can strive to be an exemplary one—defined by equality, freedom, and a strong national identity.”
