President Dissanayake Opens Jaffna Regional Passport Office

September 10, 2025

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Monday inaugurated the Jaffna Regional Office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, allowing residents of the Northern Province to obtain passports without traveling to the main office in Battaramulla or the regional office in Vavuniya.

The new office is expected to reduce the workload at the head office significantly. Since its opening, the Jaffna District Secretariat Passport Office has been processing around 350 applications per day, including approximately 250 same-day service applications. Applicants can submit their documents from 7.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. and receive their passports on the same day.

During the event, the President unveiled a commemorative plaque that drew attention for its distinctive wording. Unlike previous plaques, it did not include the names of Presidents or Ministers, instead stating:

“The Jaffna Regional Office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, built with public funds of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, was opened by the Hon. President on 1st September 2025.”
