The Ministry of Education has called for an explanation from the principal of a school in Bambalapitiya following the death of a Grade 10 student, reportedly after a sexual assault by a teacher.
In a statement issued today, the Ministry confirmed that the teacher in question has been transferred, and that disciplinary action will be taken based on the outcome of an ongoing police investigation.
Earlier in the day, a group of concerned parents and students staged a protest in front of the school, demanding justice for the student. Protesters alleged that the teacher had sexually assaulted the girl, leading her to take her own life.
The demonstration severely disrupted traffic along R. A. De Mel Mawatha (Duplication Road), prompting the deployment of a police anti-riot squad to manage the situation.
