Private Bus Owners Seek Interim Fare Hike Following Fuel Price Increase

June 1, 2026

The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association has requested the National Transport Commission (NTC) to implement an interim bus fare revision following the recent fuel price increase.

Addressing a media briefing  (31), Association Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne said the fare adjustment should be introduced ahead of the annual bus fare revision scheduled for July.

According to Wijeratne, the association expects a bus fare increase of around 5 percent to be implemented with effect from June 2, 2026.

He further stated that under the proposed revision, the minimum bus fare should increase to between Rs. 32 and Rs. 33.

Wijeratne pointed out that the recent increase in fuel prices has placed significant financial pressure on private bus operators, claiming that many services are currently operating at a loss.

The request comes days after fuel prices were revised upward, increasing operational costs for the transport sector and prompting calls for adjustments to passenger transport charges.
