Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and MP Ravi Karunanayake has proposed in Parliament that a university be established in honour of the late Lalith Athulathmudali, recognising his significant contributions to higher education in Sri Lanka.
Raising the matter with the government, the MP noted that Lalith Athulathmudali played a leading role in initiating the Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Trust Fund, which has supported thousands of students pursuing higher education.
He described Lalith Athulathmudali as an outstanding statesman whose service to the country’s education sector was immense.
The MP added that one of Athulathmudali’s key aspirations was to establish a new university dedicated to providing opportunities for highly talented students from low-income families.
Stressing the importance of expanding access to higher education, he urged the government to give serious consideration to this proposal in order to further strengthen the country’s education system.
