Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake announced that preparations are underway to hold the provincial council elections within the first six months of 2026.
He said that steps have already been taken to resolve existing legal issues surrounding the election process.
The Minister emphasized that the government is giving priority to conducting the provincial council elections before introducing broader constitutional reforms.
While constitutional changes remain part of the wider political agenda, the immediate focus is on removing legal obstacles to ensure the elections can proceed as scheduled, he added.
