Provincial Council Elections to Be Held After Agreement on New Electoral System

March 9, 2026

Minister of State Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Chandana Abeyratne says Provincial Council elections will be held as soon as a consensus is reached on a new electoral framework.

The minister made these remarks following a ceremony held in Kandy.

According to the minister, Provincial Council elections were postponed about seven years ago during the previous administration. He noted that the current government has also not conducted the elections as it has identified the need to introduce a new electoral system.

He added that discussions are currently underway regarding the proposed electoral framework.

Accordingly, a committee has been appointed to determine how the new electoral system should be implemented.

Minister Abeyratne emphasized that once the committee completes its work and an agreement is reached, the government is committed to holding the Provincial Council elections without further delay.
