Public Urged to Use LED Bulbs Under ‘Surakimu Lanka’ Energy Drive

March 30, 2026

Professor Wijendra Jayalath Bandara, Chairman of the Sustainable Energy Authority, has called on the public to switch to low-capacity lighting such as LED bulbs to support national energy conservation efforts.

The appeal comes alongside the launch of the “Surakimu Lanka” national programme, which aims to encourage responsible and reduced energy usage across the country.

The government introduced the initiative in response to possible disruptions in fuel and energy supplies linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict, as well as forecasts of an upcoming El Niño weather pattern.

The programme will run for the next five months, with special focus on reducing electricity consumption during peak hours between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

Authorities have urged citizens to actively contribute to the effort by minimizing unnecessary electricity use and adopting energy-efficient practices.
