Ramadan Begins Today as New Moon Is Sighted in Sri Lanka

February 19, 2026

Muslims across Sri Lanka have begun observing the holy month of Ramadan from today, following confirmation of the new moon sighting by the Colombo Grand Mosque.

During Ramadan, Islamic devotees observe fasting from sunrise to sunset, practise self-discipline, and dedicate increased time to prayer and reflection.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and is regarded as a period of spiritual renewal, charity, and strengthening community bonds.

Devotees traditionally abstain from food and drink during daylight hours throughout the month, breaking their fast each evening at sunset.
