Police Inspector Ashoka Ariyawansa, who has long served as the personal security officer to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, has been transferred with immediate effect to the Kankesanthurai Police Division.
The transfer follows a controversial phone call allegedly made by Inspector Ariyawansa to an officer at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The call was reportedly intended to facilitate a telephone conversation between Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, also known as Pillayan — currently in CID custody — and Wickremesinghe.
Inspector Ariyawansa has been regarded as a trusted member of Wickremesinghe’s personal security detail for many years.
The decision to reassign him was made by the Acting Inspector General of Police.
