September 6, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has responded to discussions surrounding Sri Lanka’s absence from the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China.

Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said that the decision to attend or not rests with the government. However, he emphasized that at this critical juncture, Sri Lanka must maintain friendly relations with all parties.

He further noted that the government should focus on strengthening ties with every stakeholder and avoid actions that could harm goodwill with any nation.

Karunanayake added that it is important for Sri Lanka to be present at every possible opportunity to represent itself before the international community.
