Ravi Karunanayake Accuses IMF of Double Standards on Export Policy

August 28, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has accused the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of applying double standards in its approach to Sri Lanka’s export sector.

Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said the IMF’s policies often act as contradictory measures: “What they are doing is raising one hand to support the economy while cutting off the other,” he remarked.

He stressed that Sri Lanka must make it clear to the IMF that providing incentives is essential to boost exports. According to him, reducing taxes and cutting export-related costs would encourage greater competitiveness and bring in much-needed investment.

Without such reforms, the MP warned, Sri Lanka risks losing both investment opportunities and export growth.
