UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has emphasized the need to abolish the pension scheme for Members of Parliament, stating that he will present a motion in the upcoming parliamentary session in response to public disapproval.
Speaking at a media conference in Colombo, Karunanayake asserted that such a move is essential for the country’s progress. “To build this nation, we must make this decision. Those who seek financial gain should not enter politics. I serve as an MP for five years, and I do not look for income elsewhere. If one cannot commit to this, they should not enter politics. I believe all 225 MPs will support this motion,” he stated.
Addressing the upcoming elections, he expressed support for a political alliance between the UNP and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), noting that unity between the two parties would ensure victory. “I am the most senior member of the UNP after Ranil Wickremesinghe. The UNP and SJB must come together respectfully, along with other political parties. That is what the people expect,” he added.
