Ravi Karunanayake Calls for Removal of Tariffs on U.S. Goods

August 29, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has said that removing tariffs on American goods would be more beneficial for Sri Lanka’s economy at this time.

Commenting on U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies, Karunanayake argued that Sri Lanka should not respond by restricting U.S. imports or limiting exports to the U.S. market. Instead, he stressed that the best approach would be to provide duty-free access for American goods.

He further noted that although Sri Lanka is a relatively small trading partner, its strategic importance to the United States makes it vital to consider broader diplomatic and economic realities when dealing with trade-related issues.
