Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has said that groups who previously criticized the UNP have now had to acknowledge that the party’s economic policies were correct.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake noted that the current government, which came to power promising national development, has also recognized that many actions of the UNP government were right.
He highlighted that initiatives such as the development of the port, Mahapola scholarship program, Mahaweli Development Project, the university system, and improvements in the health sector—once criticized—are now widely seen as positive contributions.
“People who saw these initiatives as wrong back then now recognize their value today,” Karunanayake said, adding that, as a UNP member, he remains proud of the party’s programs.
