Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has said that a country’s economy cannot be strengthened by oppressing entrepreneurs through excessive taxation.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake emphasized that collecting taxes unnecessarily from businesses is not a path to economic success. Instead, he said, the government should provide concessions and support to encourage entrepreneurship.
“A country can be developed by nurturing entrepreneurs,” he added, accusing the current government of discouraging those trying to establish or expand businesses. Karunanayake warned that such policies are negatively affecting the national economy.
