Ravi Karunanayake Highlights Teacher Salary Disparity in Parliament

August 11, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has raised concerns in Parliament over the salary disparity faced by teachers.

He noted that the majority of teachers earn between Rs. 53,000 and Rs. 80,000, while an office assistant at the Central Bank receives a salary of Rs. 150,000, highlighting a significant gap.

Karunanayake questioned whether the current government is taking steps to address this imbalance. He also pointed out a noticeable decline in the number of students being admitted to grade one in schools compared to previous years, signaling broader challenges in the education sector.
