Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP) and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake says the current government’s credibility is under fire because it has failed to implement the vision it promised before coming to power.
In an interview with CeylonWire, Karunanayake stated that the failure to fulfill pre-election promises is the main reason for the growing public perception that the government is making false claims.
He noted that while in opposition, it is easy to throw around terms like “lies” and “corruption” without accountability. However, he warned that such rhetoric, when used excessively, becomes like an addiction—comparable to opium—because it can easily manipulate public opinion.
Karunanayake emphasized that governing demands truth and responsibility, unlike the freedom to make unchecked accusations while in opposition.
