Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has urged President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to explore the possibility of restarting the National Insurance Trust Fund, originally launched by the UNP-led government elected in 2015.
The MP emphasized that the current situation in the country is not a time for making politically motivated decisions. He highlighted that the National Insurance Trust Fund had received support from the World Bank, with representatives praising the previous government for introducing the programme, the first of its kind in the world.
Ravi Karunanayake explained that the insurance scheme was discontinued by subsequent governments, but its existence had previously enabled the successful compensation of residents in Kolonnawa affected by the 2016 Colombo floods. He stressed that reinstating the programme could provide critical support in mitigating losses from future disasters.
