Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has raised concerns in Parliament over the government’s lack of clarity regarding ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, particularly in light of tariffs imposed during the Trump administration.
Karunanayake questioned the nature and progress of discussions being held by Sri Lankan representatives currently visiting the US, asking whom they are negotiating with on the American side.
He noted that, following recent talks on the US-imposed tariffs, 17 countries—including Canada, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, and India—are reportedly preparing to sign agreements with the United States as early as next week.
Despite these developments, no direct response was provided by the ruling party. Deputy Minister Harshana Suriyapperuma stated that all matters related to US tariffs and negotiations would be addressed during the upcoming debate in Parliament.
