Former United National Party Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has responded to criticism from certain civil society organisations regarding the role of the opposition.
Speaking at a media briefing, Karunanayake was asked to comment on allegations that civil society groups have been performing the role expected of the parliamentary opposition led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
In response, Karunanayake said public statements should be assessed with reason and critical thinking, adding that not all claims should be accepted at face value.
He further alleged that some civil society organisations make such statements to attract funding from non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Karunanayake argued that civil society groups should support constructive democratic engagement rather than making what he described as unfounded allegations against the opposition.
He also called on the media to report such issues responsibly and provide balanced coverage.
