Ravi Karunanayake Reveals Root Causes Behind UNP’s Collapse

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, says the downfall of the once-dominant political force is primarily due to internal disunity and the marginalization of experienced members.

In an interview with ceylonwire.lk, Karunanayake emphasized that the lack of internal cohesion and proper organization led to the party’s defeat in the recent local government elections. “There was no space for deserving individuals or seniors within the party, which weakened its foundation,” he said.

He also criticized certain individuals within the UNP for making key decisions without consulting senior members, warning that such actions will only accelerate the party’s decline.

Karunanayake further noted that the UNP’s candidate lists were prepared without properly considering the demographic composition of the relevant areas, which he said was a major reason for the party’s electoral setbacks.
