Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has submitted a private member’s motion to Parliament seeking a ban on naming political parties after ethnic or religious identities.
The motion is scheduled for debate on Friday, October 10, alongside seven other private member’s motions listed on the parliamentary agenda.
According to the motion, the proposal is intended to prevent political parties from adopting names that highlight ethnicity or religion. Karunanayake argues that such a measure would promote an inclusive national identity in politics and help reduce divisions based on ethnicity.
