Red Warning Issued as Heavy Rains Expected Across Several Areas

May 13, 2026

The Department of Meteorology has issued a red warning for intense rainfall affecting several parts of the country.

According to the department, the current rainy weather is expected to persist due to a low-pressure system located near Sri Lanka.

Very heavy rainfall exceeding 150mm is forecast in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North Western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile, other areas of the island may experience heavy showers of around 100mm.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and take necessary safety measures to reduce the risk of damage caused by heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning associated with thundershowers.
