Rise in Underage Pregnancies Reported in Sri Lanka

The Police Children and Women’s Bureau has reported an increase in underage pregnancies across the country, with 213 cases documented so far this year.

Deputy Inspector General Renuka Jayasundara attributed this rise to romantic relationships among girls under the age of 16, noting that many pregnancies resulted from sexual assaults within these relationships.

She further emphasized that inadequate knowledge of sexual health, lack of proper protection, and early sexual activity were key factors contributing to the issue.
