Sri Lankan javelin star Rumesh Tharanga has climbed to third place in the latest world rankings for the men’s javelin throw, equalling the highest ranking ever achieved by a Sri Lankan athlete in track and field history.
The achievement matches the record set by Susanthika Jayasinghe, who was ranked third in the world in the women’s 200 metres during the 2000–2001 period.
Tharanga’s rise in the rankings follows a series of outstanding performances on the international stage, further cementing his status as one of the world’s leading javelin throwers.
The Sri Lankan athlete also continues to hold the world-leading mark for 2026, having recorded the best javelin throw performance globally this year.
His remarkable season has brought significant recognition to Sri Lankan athletics and strengthened hopes for further success at upcoming international competitions.
Sports analysts have hailed the achievement as one of the greatest milestones in Sri Lankan athletics, placing Tharanga alongside the country’s most celebrated track and field athletes.
With the season still underway, Tharanga remains among the leading contenders in world athletics and continues to set new benchmarks for Sri Lankan sport.
