Former UNP Deputy Leader of the Opposition, MP Ravi Karunanayake, has said that vehicle imports are contributing to inflation and putting pressure on the country’s currency.
Speaking at a media briefing, he pointed out that the rupee has been significantly affected by the volume of vehicle imports.
The MP added that the Central Bank, which claims to act independently, should clarify the facts on this matter.
He noted that as a result, the value of the US dollar has risen from 292 rupees to 313 rupees.
Karunanayake also said that the Central Bank cannot attribute the situation solely to government policy or vehicle imports, suggesting that a clearer explanation is needed.
