The Salt Producers’ Association has raised concerns over a shortage of salt in the local market, attributing the issue to delays in the arrival of imported stocks.
According to the Association’s Chairman, Ganaka Amarasinghe, although the government approved the importation of 30 metric tons of salt, the shipment has been delayed. As a result, a shortage has emerged, affecting both availability and pricing.
Amarasinghe, however, assured that the situation is expected to stabilize within the coming week, as the delayed consignment is scheduled to arrive shortly.
In the meantime, consumers and traders have reported a steep rise in salt prices, with 1-kilogram packets of crystal salt being sold for between Rs. 450 and Rs. 500 in some areas. The sudden price hike has sparked frustration among the public, with many taking to social media to express their concerns.
Ada Derana contacted the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) for a response. Asela Bandara, Director of Consumer Affairs and Information, confirmed that the Authority has received multiple complaints regarding inflated salt prices.
He stated that CAA raiding officers have been directed to investigate the complaints and take appropriate action against vendors found exploiting the situation.
