The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) says school premises have recorded the highest number of dengue mosquito breeding sites during inspections carried out this year.
NDCU Director Dr. Kapila Kannangara said mosquito larvae have also been found in factories, government institutions and other public places.
More than 75,000 dengue cases have been reported across the country so far this year, with 52.7% of the total cases recorded in the Western Province.
The NDCU also revealed that women account for 70% of dengue-related deaths reported in Sri Lanka this year. Of the 53 dengue deaths reported so far, 37 were women.
Dr. Kannangara urged women in particular to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms of dengue, noting that many deaths have occurred because patients delayed seeking treatment.
According to the Unit, the highest number of dengue-related deaths has been reported among people aged between 25 and 49 years, as well as those over the age of 65.
Five children are also among the reported dengue fatalities.
