The National Council for Road Safety has announced that from January 1 next year, it will be compulsory for all vehicles traveling on expressways to have passengers wear seat belts.
Council Chairman Manjula Kulatunga stated that a three-month grace period will be granted for vehicles manufactured without seat belts.
He also noted that around 88% of passengers have requested the extension of the seat belt law to city bus services as well. Plans are also underway to make seat belts mandatory for long-distance bus services.
